First Aid Treatment for Fractures
Fractures are breaks in the bones. A simple fracture is one where there is no wound on the skin. A compound fracture is one where a broken bone protrudes through the skin.
First Aid Treatment for Fractures
- Don’t lift the victim. Let him lie flat on the ground or where you found him. Don’t massage or use any herbal concoction or poultice on the fracture.
- Examine the body for bleeding but do not move the extremities. If he is conscious, ask him where it hurts.
- When the fracture is identified, immobilize the body part. Get two pieces of wood or sticks and splint the fractured leg or arm. Cut out his clothes or your shirt to tie the splint if strings are not available. Handkerchiefs may be used, if available, to tie the splint.
- The splint should be placed to limit the movement of the joints. The fractured arm can be tied to the body while the fractured leg can be tied to the other leg if splint materials are not available.
- Transport the victim carefully and right away to the nearest hospital for immediate care.

- Fever sponge bath. Give hot water sponge bath if the patient has high fever and his arms and legs are cold. Give cold water sponge bath if the skin is dry and hot. Give warm water sponge bath if there is fever with a generalized hot skin. Give a fever sponge bath three times a day, or more, if needed.
- Bed rest with continuous cold compress on the forehead.
- Hot foot bath. If fever is due to head congestion and flu, give a hot foot bath in the morning and in the evening, after supper.
- Drink one glass of water or juice every hour during waking hours.

Fainting is a feeling of light-headedness and dizziness.

- Lower the head between the knees, if the patient is sitting on a chair.
- Or, let him lie flat with the head lower than the feet. This is done to draw blood to the head.
- Check pulse and respiration to see if breathing and pulse is strong. If the breathing is rapid and the pulse is strong, get a paper or plastic bag big enough to cover the face. Hold the bag over th nose and mouth and let patient breathe in and out slowly in the bag for a few minutes. If he does not recover after 15-20 minutes, bring the patient to the nearest hospital or clinic for medical attention.
- If the patient is not breathing and his pulse cannot be felt, prepare to give cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Have someone call a doctor or get ready to transport the patient to the nearest hospital. If someone is able to do CPR, give CPR while the patient is being transported to the hospital. Stop only when the patient’s pulse becomes palpable and he is already breathing.
- Check if the patient is diabetic or not. Ask the family.

KangKong – Scientific name: Ipomea aquatica Torsk

A smooth, widely spreading vine, with the stems trailing on mud or floating on water. Leaves are oblong-ovatem 7-14 cm long, with a pointed tip and heart- or arrow-shaped base, long petiole, the margins entire or angular, and sub-lobed. The peduncles are erect, 2.5 to 5 cm long, with 1 or 2 flowers in the axis of the leaves. Sepals are green, oblong, about 8 mm.
