Home Remedies for Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a common symptom of gastrointestinal disease, characterized by increased frequency and fluid consistency of the stool.

How to Stop Diarrhea

  1. Withhold food and liquid if possible, for 4 hours. Sips of buko juice or sprite may be taken every 30 minutes. Take small amounts at a time, but frequently.
  2. For nursing babies: Replace milk with rice watee or buko juice for feedings. With hold all solids and other liquids except the rice water or buko juice.
  3. If uncontrolled within one day, consult the physician.

Diarrhea Treatment Using Herbal Medications

  1. Tanglad leaves ( english: Lemon grass, Ginger grass, Sweet-rush)
    • Boil 10 young leaves in 2 glasses of water for 10 minutes. Add a tablespoon sugar and one small piece crushed ginger.
      • Dosage:
        Adults: 1 cup, 3 times a day and afer every loose bowel movement.
        Children: ( babies) 1 tablesppon, 3 time a day and after every loose bowel movement.
        (2-6 yrs) 1/4 cup, 3 times a day and after every loose bowel movement.
        (7-12 yrs) 1/2 cup, 3 times a day and after every loose bowel movement.

  2. Kugon roots ( english: Cogon grass)
    • Boil 5 chopped fresh roots in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes.
      • Dosage:
        Adults: 1 cup, 3 times a day and afer every loose bowel movement.
        Children: ( babies) 1 tablesppon, 3 time a day and after every loose bowel movement.
        (2-6 yrs) 1/4 cup, 3 times a day and after every loose bowel movement.
        (7-12 yrs) 1/2 cup, 3 times a day and after every loose bowel movement.

  3. Kaymito leaves ( english: Star apple)
    • Boil 1 cup chopped leaves in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes.
      • Dosage:
        Adults: 1 cup, 3 times a day and afer every loose bowel movement.
        Children: ( babies) 1 tablesppon, 3 time a day and after every loose bowel movement.
        (2-6 yrs) 1/4 cup, 3 times a day and after every loose bowel movement.
        (7-12 yrs) 1/2 cup, 3 times a day and after every loose bowel movement.

  4. Bayabas leaves ( english: Guava)
    • Boil 10 chopped leaves in 2 glasses of water for 10 minutes. Add a tablespoon sugar and one small piece crushed ginger.
      • Dosage:
        Adults: 1 cup, 3 times a day and afer every loose bowel movement.
        Children: ( babies) 1 tablesppon, 3 time a day and after every loose bowel movement.

  5. Makahiya leaves ( english: Sensitive plant, Mimosa)
    • Boil 1 cup chopped leaves in 2 glasses of water for 15 minutes.
      • Dosage:
        Adults: 1 cup, 3 times a day and afer every loose bowel movement.
        Children: ( babies) 1 tablesppon, 3 time a day and after every loose bowel movement.
        (2-6 yrs) 1/4 cup, 3 times a day and after every loose bowel movement.
        (7-12 yrs) 1/2 cup, 3 times a day and after every loose bowel movement.
